Introduction ****************************************************************************** Yu-Gi-Oh! Dark Duel Stories is an excellent game. This is a great game made after the card game in the anime and manga series of the same name. It has great replay value as you try and collect all the cards. One of the cool features about both the card game itself and the video game are the card codes. The card codes are used to unlock the cards in the game if you own the original card. On the original card there is an 8 digit number located in the lower left corner. You enter that into the password mode in the video game and you get that card. ****************************************************************************** III. Gameplay Basics ****************************************************************************** ======================= Section A. Introduction ======================= Player's Objectives ------------------- Fight your way through each of the stages in the Campaign mode, defeat the final boss and finally face off against the four Rulers of The Heavens, the keepers of the fabled Millennium Items. Creature your own original cards, complete with your friends to collect their cards, and battle to become a better Duelist. Basic Rules ----------- Each duelist starts out with 8000 Life Points (LP). A duel is conducted on a turn-by-turn basis, and turns alternate between the two players. A duelist may only play one monster card per turn. There are no limit to the number of magic or trap cards that can be played. During a turn, it is no necessary to play a card or execute any action with the cards played on the field. A duelist can chose to end a turn without doing anything. At the start of each turn, duelists can draw one card to replenish their hand. If there are five cards in a duelist's hand, no card is drawn. When played, a monster card is placed facedown, and is turned face up when it executes a command. However, if the command is to "Defend", the card remains facedown. Further, a facedown card will be turned face up when it is attacked. Once a card is turned face up, it remains that way until the duel is resolved. Build/Edit Decks ---------------- You won't ever be able to lift the number of cards you have in your deck. It's always 40. You cannot go over 40 cards. So to edit your deck, you must remove card(s) from your deck first, by selecting "RETURN TO CHEST" in your Deck screen. Then go into your Chest screen, select the card(s) you want to add to your deck and select "ADD TO DECK". If you cannot add a card to your deck, it's most likely because you're over your 40 card limit. Another reason you cannot may be because your Duelist Level doesn't mean the requirements of a certain card. Monster Cards ------------- **Sacrificing** In order to summon a level 5-6 card, you need to sacrifice 1 monster. In order to summon a level 7-8 card, you need to sacrifice 2 monsters. To sacrifice a monster, click "A" when hovering over a monster you wish to sacrifice. Then go to "OFFR" and press A again. The card will be sent to your graveyard. **Effect Monsters** Some monsters have special effects. To find out what they are, go into the details screen when you're looking at your deck. To activate an effect, click the "A" button and go to "SPCL". **Fusion** Fusion means to take two creatures and put them together to make a stronger creature. To use Fusion, play a card on top of another card that's already in play. If the two cards in question are able to fuse, you will see a new monster in the place of the first monster. If the two cards are not fusible, the first card will be replaced with the second card. Note: A monster formed by fusion cannot attack or be re-positioned in the same turn. However, fusion is not considered to be a Summon move. Hence, another monster can be brought into play if the fusion is successful. ===================== Section B. Game Modes ===================== CAMPAIGN Mode ------------- In order to get to Stage 2, you must beat everyone in Stage 1 five times. Same with Stage 3. Stage 1 [Domino Town 1] -Yugi -Tristan -Joey -Mai -Mako Stage 2 [Domino Town 2] -Rex -Weevil -Kaiba -Esp Roba -Seeker -Pandora Stage 3 [Ancient Egypt] -Paradox -Pegasus -Slysheen -Ishizu Final Stage [Heavens] -DarkNite -Yami Yugi *Millennium Puzzle & Millennium Tauk (later)* -Yami Bakura *Millennium Ring & Millennium Eye (later)* -Nitemare -Shadi *Millennium Ankh & Millennium Scale* -Marik *Millennium Rod* CONSTRUCTION Mode ----------------- This mode allows you to create your own monster cards. First, select the type of the card-part to be used. Use START to switch between the "upper body 1" & "lower body 1" and the "upper body 2" / "lower body 2". Second, with the control pad, use Up/Down to change the upper body parts, and Left/Right to change the lower body parts. Switching card=parts changes the graphics and capabilities of a card. Third, once you have the desired combination for a card, press the A button to enter the card. The constructed card will be moved into your Chest. VERSUS Mode ----------- Go head to head with another duelist. One useful thing about this is that you get twenty points added to your Deck Capacity if you win a duel. TRADE Mode ---------- The Chest must contain cards that can be used in a duel. In short, you cannot trade unless you have over 50 cards that are lower in Deck Cost value than your current Duelist Level. First get into the Trade mode and link up. Then, select a card to be traded from the Chest. After selecting a card and pressing the A button, the cursor will shift to the Command area where "To Exchange" can be selected and entered. Selecting "Details" will provide information regarding a selected card. A maximum of five cards can be selected. RECORD Mode ----------- The Record screen will display your Duelist Level, Deck Volume, etc. Press Left/Right no the control pad to look at your performance in the Campaign mode. It allows you to verify information such as your Duel Name, Duelist Level and Deck Capacity. Also, you can switch between screens with Left/Right on the Control Pad to verify your Campaign performance. PASSWORD Mode ------------- On every Duel Monsters card there is an eight-digit password on the lower left corner directly below the card's picture. Enter this code in the "PASSWORD" option on the main screen, and the card will be recorded into your card collection. ========================== Section C. Tips and Tricks ========================== Card Codes/Password Mode ------------------------ On every Duel Monsters card there is an eight-digit password on the lower left corner directly below the card's picture. Enter this code in the "PASSWORD" option on the main screen, and the card will be recorded into your card collection. Enter "65437205" as a card password, and every time you win a battle, you'll get an extra card from Yugi's grandpa! DON'T WORRY! YOU DON'T... ------------------------- ...lose cards from losing a battle ...lose Deck Capacity points ...have to save! The game does is automatically. Duelist Level ------------- This figure rates a player's level as a duelist. You can only use cards whose Deck Cost amount is lower than your Duelist Level. This stat grows higher as you battle. Deck Capacity ------------- This stat rates a player's capability for building a deck. If the total Deck Cost of the 40 cards assembled in a deck exceeds the Deck Capacity, you cannot engage in a duel. Deck Capacity increases in the following manner: - Campaign Mode: five points for each duel weather you win or lose - Versus Mode: twenty points increase - Trade: two points each time you trade a card Field Effect Charts ------------------- O = Favorable Ø = Unfavorable **Chart 1** \----------------------------------------------------------------------------/ Class - Dragon - Magician - Zombie - Warrior -BeastWar - Beast -WngBeast ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Forest O O Wasteland Mountains O O Meadow O O Umi Yami O /----------------------------------------------------------------------------\ **Chart 2** \----------------------------------------------------------------------------/ Class - Fiend - Fairy - Insect - Dinosaur- Reptile - Fish -SeaDragon ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Forest O Wasteland O Mountains Meadow Umi O O Yami O Ø /----------------------------------------------------------------------------\ **Chart 3** \------------------------------------------------------------------/ Class -Machine - Thunder - Aqua - Pyro - Rock - Plant ------------------------------------------------------------------ Forest O Wasteland O Mountains O Meadow Umi Ø O O Ø Yami /------------------------------------------------------------------\ ****************************************************************************** IV. You are rewarded with one card and one card part when you win a dual. However, you will not lose a card when you are defeated in a duel. There are a number of locations on the map where duels are fought. You move on to another map by defeating each duelist on a map five times or more. Domino Town 1 ============= (clockwise starting with YUGI) YUGI / TRISTAN / JOEY / MAI / MAKO These guys are fairly easy. You shouldn't even break a sweat against them. You probably could keep your deck the way it is at the beginning of the game, but you may want to enter a couple card codes if you must, just to boost your deck a lil' more. But you don't need to really. The order you should duel the duelists in doesn't matter, but the easiest way is to follow the order of duelists as stated above. \/\/\/\/ Domino Town 2 ============= (clockwise starting with Esp Roba) Esp Roba / REX / WEEVIL / KAIBA / Pandora / Seeker This is where the strategy comes in to play. Right now you can't really overpower them, so you should stick with recreating a new deck for every duelist almost you battle according to the main type they use; Oh yeah I forgot, before I begin you should duel the duelists in this order, seeing as it's the easiest - REX, WEEVIL, Esp Roba, Seeker, Pandora, KAIBA. Ok now I'll begin. REX (Uses Earth) - Have lots of Wind cards in your deck. Earth has a weakness to Wind, and no matter the stats Wind always gets an instant defeat when attacking an Earth card. Have a couple of Pyro cards handy to so you can get rid of any Forest cards he brings out to get instant defeats against your Wind cards, so take advantage of that with the Pyros - which in turn get instant defeats against Forest cards. WEEVIL (Uses Forest) - Have lots of Pyro cards in your deck. Forest has a weakness to Pyro, and no matter the stats Pyro always gets an instant defeat when attacking an Forest card. Have a couple of Thunder cards handy to so you can get rid of any Aqua cards he brings out to get instant defeats against your Pyro cards, so take advantage of that with the Thunders - which in turn get instant defeats against Aqua cards. Esp Roba (Uses Fiend) - Have lots of Light cards in your deck. Fiend has a weakness to Light, and no matter the stats Light always gets an instant defeat when attacking an Forest card. Have a couple of Dreams cards handy to so you can get rid of any Shadow cards he brings out to get instant defeats against your Light cards, so take advantage of that with the Dreams - which in turn get instant defeats against Shadow cards. Seeker - (Uses Earth) - This is so ridiculously easy it's pathetic, you should just use the Light card deck that used against Esp Roba, as long as there is some 4 Stars with brute strength (ie. in the thousands). Although he occasionally uses Shadow cards, which instantlly defeat Light cards - you'll be fine as long as you pack some 4 stars with brute strength that aren't of the Light class... you can find many that are of Earth class (ie. the many Dinosaurs in the game). Seeker is probably the easiest of the six in Tomino Town 2. Pandora - (Uses Shadow) Once again use your Light card deck, but this time you need to make some modifications on which cards you have in it. Make sure to have lots of Dream cards in it because Shadow cards can instantly defeat Light cards in a flash. After you get a hang of it, you'll realize that Pandora isn't that hard after all. KAIBA - (Uses various types, mostly Light) No modifications to your Light deck or any new decks should be made. Using your Light & Dream deck you can take Kaiba pretty well. You might have to restart a couple of duels, because your bound to lose at least once against this guy, so don't get discouraged. To see the deck I had by the time I finished Tomino Town 2, refer to the Deck Constructions section of this FAQ/Walkthrough. \/\/\/\/ Ancient Egypt ============= (clockwise starting with Paradox) Paradox / P.Seto / Ishizu / Slysheen Once again, the duelists that have unlocked are harder then the ones defeated previously. To start out you should duel Ishizu first, seeing as she is the easiest out of the bunch. Ishizu - (Uses Fiend, Shadow, Light, and DEVINE!) At first glance, this might seem like a hard battle, but in reality it isn't at all. You should once again use your Light & Dream deck. This duel requires a whole lot of strategizing so be prepared, she has many fusions to use and uses Sword of the Revealing Light often, which stops you from attacking for three WHOLE turns! Add to the fact she uses Dark Holes sometimes, you shouldn't overlook anything. If she combines to form a Cosmo Queen, you might as well quit the duel now, because it has 2900 ATK and is Devine (therefore has no weaknesses), so it's hard to overcome - unless you had placed a Remove Trap in your previous turn, or you are able to pull out a Blue Eyes White Dragon. Refer to above for a well rounded deck to use against her. Slysheen - (Uses Fiend) This guy is pretty easy compared to Ishizu. For the like 5th time, use the same deck as i told u before, because Slysheen seems to barely ever pull a card of a different type aside from Fiend. He does have a Sword of the Revealing Light, but rarely ever gets a chance to use it. Simple battle. Ok, so now your stuck with two duelists left to defeat in Ancient Egypt. Both of them are really good duelists, but let's start off dueling Paradox first. Paradox - (Uses Light, but mainly Magic/Trap) This guy is crazy. His deck consists of nearly all Magic and Trap cards or so it seems, and all of his monster cards are Light mostly. You can still beat this guy fair and square if you want with that Light & Dream deck you've been using if you want to take forever...A good trick is to duel him, and if he doesn't have a bad hand from the beginning (meaning one with no monster cards) restart your GameBoy Color/ Advance until he does. Because if he ever starts with a bad hand full of Magic and Trap cards only, he's toast. Anyhow, speaking of him using a lot of Magic and Trap cards, he does. He uses from Swords of the Revealing Light to Dian Kiot the Cure (healing 5000 LP!), to Spellbinding Circle, Crush Card, and Bright Castle. OUCH! Paradox is also one of the first duelists you face that use more than then three of a card in his deck as the next duelists begin to do as well. Ever feel the wrath of three Spellbinding Circles? It hurts. P.Seto - (Uses Earth, Light, Shadow, and Fiend) Ok, you COULD use the same deck you have been using, but it's extremely hard to beat P.Seto with it. I was only lucky enough to defeat him twice...and I had retried many times by then also. So I made another deck based on Dragons & Shadow cards. With that I defeated him three more times in a matter of minutes. Look out for Dark Hole, Raigeki, and Change of Heart. He also has Blue Eyes White Dragon. Because of he uses such cards, make sure to make your moves count...and remember to think before acting. But then again, like all of the final duelists, it seems that P. Seto a lot times ends up without having monster cards in his hand because of the fact that he has overloaded his deck with many magic and trap cards. This makes ample time for you to lessen his LP faster and faster. ------------BEGIN------------- Checks and Balances =================== The following deck I used to complete Domino Town 2 and Ancient Egypt (well not all 5 times for P.Seto). It is pretty good for an early deck. The following requirements are needed for this deck, mind you... Duelist Level: 35 (cuz #1 BEWD) Deck Capacity: 725 *Monster Cards* #1 Blue Eyes White Dragon - (Light) #24 Skull Servant - (Fiend) #33 Judge Man - (Light) #44 Rogue Doll - (Light) #80 Uraby - (Earth) #90 Gyakutenno Megami - (Light) #125 Faith Bird - (Light) #127 Ansatsu - (Shadow) #143 Chronolord - (Dreams) #192 Key Mace - (Light) #359 Seiyaryu - (Light) #366 Labyrinth Wall - (Earth) #427 Kaiser Dragon- (Light) #428 Magician of Faith - (Light) #493 Maha Vailo - (Light) #513 Guardian of the Throne - (Light) #532 Gemini Elf- (Light) #551 Dark Elf - (Shadow) #631 Maiden of the Moon - (Dreams) #642 Mystical Sheep #1 - (Dreams) #732 Jigen Bakuden - (Dreams) x2 #733 Thousand-eyes Idol - (Dreams) #747 Gazelle the King of Dreams - (Dreams) #758 Big Shield Gardna - (Earth) #795 Dunames Dark Witch - (Light) #800 Talons of Shurilan - (Dreams) *Construction Cards* 6/25 CentipedeHookworm - (Dreams) 24/15 IcicleVern - (Dreams) 26/6 Bell BillMantis - (Dreams) *Magic Cards* #338 Mooyan Curry #339 Red Medicine #343 Sparks #350 Dark-piercing Light x2 #658 Metalmorph #790 The Inexperienced Duelist *Trap Cards* #685 Acid Trap Hole #688 Simochi Allergy #689 Reverse Trap ------------END------------- \/\/\/\/ DarkNite ======== DarkNite (Uses Earth, Light, and Forest)- Ok, use the Dragon & Shadow deck once again and you'll have an actually easier time against DarkNite then P. Seto. I only had to retry once. Look out for Swords of the Revealing Light, which he uses, sometimes even twice consecutively. Like P. Seto, DarkNite ends up many times running out of monster cards in his hand because of the fact that he has also overloaded his deck with many magic and trap cards. Aslo making ample time for you to lessen DarkNite's LP faster and faster as done with P.Seto previously. \/\/\/\/ Special Duels =============== Note: Refer to the Special Codes Listing in this FAQ/Walkthrough for the passwords to use to unlock these special duels. Remember you must have beaten the game first before you may become able to duel the following duelists. It starts out as Yami Yugi. You use passwords to change the level to a duelist that you wish for. Use the code for Yami Yugi to change the selection screen back to Yami Yugi. Yami Yugi - (Uses Fiend and Shadow mostly) This guy is hilarious. Not only does he brag about his 'wonderful' Dark Magician deck...he's really not that much of a challenge either. In fact, during the course of the five times I dueled him, he never got to use that Dark Magician he loves so much either. Use the same deck you made previously. Another person with the 'Magic / Trap Overload Syndrome', which leaves him vulnerable to attack often. I'd say he is as easy as the first three duelists you faced in Ancient Egypt... meaning easy. To proceed with the following hidden duelists, u must beat Yami Yugi at least 5 times and enter the following codes to duel them. That is the ONLY way to achieve such a feat... Yami Bakura 07119986 Fight Yami Bakura - Must have beaten YamiYugi 5x Nitemare 43504084 Fight Nitemare - Must have beaten YamiYugi 5x Shadi 70592699 Fight Shadi - Must have beaten YamiYugi 5x Marik 06987398 Fight Marik - Must have beaten YamiYugi 5x To duel Yami Yugi again after changing the last duelist to one of the last 4, enter the following code..... Yami Yugi 70715281 Fight Yami Yugi- Must have beaten him 5x Yami Bakura - (Uses Shadow, Forest, Pyro, Fiend, Aqua- Nearly everything ) Probably the hardest duelist to overcome in the game, no joke either...I kept with that Dragon & Shadow deck I created when against P. Seto, but made a few modifications including adding a Meteor Black Dragon in place of another card and adding a few Aqua and Thunder 4 star monster cards in place of others. The Thunder monsters were to deal with that pesky Aqua Dragon he always seemed to bring out, after sacrifing my card after using Change of Heart (D'oh!)...You can't really keep on reseting on this guy, because he never seems to not have monster cards in his hand. But when he does, he always uses Swords of Revealing Light until he gets a good monster card in play...which is kind of in your advantage with that wonderful Crush Card you better have in your deck! (Have at least two! Very helpful). He also uses Labyrinth Wall very often to distract you, while waiting to get another Aqua Dragon or Meteor Black Dragon out...Which you use a Crush Card or Thunder or Aqua card to take care of.... Get the picture? Once you have defeated Yami Bakura, it's pretty easy on out from there. Nitemare - (Uses...well, barely anything, but when he does Fiend and DEVINE!) This duel is laughable. ROTFLMAO laughable. This is what happens nearly 99% (not statistically proven, just assumption) of the time with Nitemare; For the first turn, he uses Brain Control his first or second turn - never having a monster out either. Which doesn't make sense seeing as you'll get the card back next turn plus you'll have another card out leading you to be able to attack him, as he has NO MONSTER CARDS OUT. ::Cusses for few minutes:: IT MAKES NO SENSE ON HOW STUPID THIS GUY IS! He even uses Shadow Spell for his first turn, when he has gone first, and when YOU DON'T EVEN HAVE CARDS OUT ON THE FIELD! ::sighs:: The only cards you should be aware of is his Raigeki and .....Gate Guardian. He uses Raigeki often when you have 2+ monsters out just for fun it seems. If he ever gets 2 of his own cards out or gets one of his plus one of yours from Brain Control, he sacrifices them to pull out a Gate Guardian. This is the crucial time in this duel, because if he pulls out the guardian, you can die really quickly. Use a Crush Card, Acid Trap Hole, or Trap Master to get rid of the Gate Guardian, seeing as he has no weaknesses. That or you could powerup any Dragon cards (easiest to powerup in my opinion) with Dragon Treasure and/or Mountain cards. Nitemare may seem hard with this Gate Guardian of his, but he rarely pulls it out and otherwise, this is an easy duel. Refer to below for that Dragons & Shadow (well at least it used to be that) deck I was talking about. -----------BEGIN------------- Unleash the Dragon (ALPHA) ================== The following deck I used to defeat P.Seto (well not all 5 times for P.Seto), DarkNite, Yami Yugi, Yami Bakura, Nitemare and the rest of the hidden duelists. It is pretty good for an early deck. I did make a few modifications for some battles, so this is what was leftover. The following requirements are needed for this deck, mind you... Duelist Level: 37 (cuz #217 BSD) Deck Capacity: 937 *Monster Cards* #4 Baby Dragon - (Earth) #7 Winged Dragon #1 - (Wind) #10 Blackland Fire Dragon - (Shadow) #16 Time Wizard - (Dreams) #28 Mystical Elf - (Light) #31 Koumori Dragon - (Fiend) #40 Dragon Piper - (Pyro) #77 Grappler - (Aqua) #80 Uraby - (Earth) #81 Crawling Dragon #2 - (Fiend) #97 Dragon Zombie - (Fiend) #120 Dream Clown - (Dreams) #129 Nemuriko - (Shadow) #168 Darkfire Dragon - (Pyro) #200 Petit Dragon - (Wind) #217 Black Skull Dragon - (Fiend) #296 One-eyed Shield Dragon #298 Wicked Dragon with Teeth - (Fiend) #367 Jirai Gumo - (Forest) #379 La Jinn the Mystic - (Shadow) #387 Mystic Lamp - (Shadow) #432 Waterdragon fairy -(Aqua) #459 Tripwire Beast - (Thunder) #493 Maha Vailo - (Light) #502 Dragon Human - (Earth) #532 Gemini Elf - (Light) #551 Dark Elf - (Shadow) #631 Maiden of the Moon - (Dreams) #649 Hibikime - (Shadow) #713 Meteor Black Dragon - (Pyro) #747 Gazelle the King of Dreams - (Dreams) #758 Big Shield Gardna - (Earth) #795 Dunames Dark Witch - (Light) #799 Cyber-tech Alligator - (Wind) *Construction Cards* None *Magic Cards* #332 Mountain #350 Dark-piercing Light #661 Crush Card x2 *Trap Cards* #685 Acid Trap Hole #689 Reverse Trap ------------END------------- Shadi - (Uses Aqua, Light and Fiend with some Earth and Devine) By now these opponents are getting way easier since you last faced Yami Bakura. WAY too easy. Heck, the only hard part I had with this guy is when he started using his magic and trap cards. So that's how the battle goes; sometimes going from an easy time destroying her 4-stars to all of a suddenly facing her crazy 6, 7, or 8 stars because of MAGIC. AHH HAH! That's the key! Destroy her before she begins to use a whole lot of Magic cards and you'll have a relatively easy ride. Marik - (Mostly Fiend with a sprinkling of Shadow and Devine cards) Build a nice Light deck and you'll defeat Marik in a matter of minutes. One thing to take notice is that he has some Dark Elfs, which messes up the whole Light deck, as well as having a few Devine cards in his desposal. This can cause some problems as well. Ending ====== Pictures of the three God cards: -The God of Obelisk (Japanese pronunciation: OBERISUKU No Kyo Shin Hei, literally meaning The Immense Divine Soldier of Obelisk) -Saint Dragon - God of Osiris (Japanese pronunciation: OSHIRISU No Tenkuu Ryu, literally meaning The Saint Dragon of Osiris) -The Sun of God Dragon (Japanese pronunciation: RA No Yoku Shin Ryu, literally meaning The Winged Divine Dragon of Ra) Along with the words "TO BE CONTINUED...." ****************************************************************************** V. OR from the top menu just press down 2 times. Yugi will say something about the 8 digit code. The following screen will let you enter the code by pressing up or down to select the number and left and right to move to the next number. Once the code is entered press A and select Yes. If it's correct you will see the card, it's description and all that good stuff about it. These are just a very small ammount from all sets of the actual card game. And you can only use each card code to get one single copy of that card. Entering it again will just result in a message stating that you already have entered that code previously. I hope these help you kick the games butt real good by unlocking ultra rare and ultra powerful cards...and even some of those wimpy ones if you need a few extra.
